One of the signature campus buildings at Yale University, the Nave at Sterling Memorial Library underwent an extensive restoration in 2015. In my role as the Project Architect at Helpern Archtects, I played a key part in the design coordination and construction administration of the project, working closely with the client, construction manager, consultants on-site and master craftsman. We were tasked with preserving and enhancing the decorative elements that define the building's unique character while updating the lighting, IT and mechanical systems to modern standards. From the intricate card ceiling panels to the timeless Bonawait stained glass and the exquisite Samuel Yellin ornamental metalwork, every detail received meticulous attention. The team worked tirelessly to come up with innovative solutions to challenge of updating the buildings systems without altering the historic fabric of the building. Card catalogs were ingeniously repurposed to house fan coil units by the skilled craftsmen at CW Keller and Associates. Lighting and information and systems access pointes were integrated into seamlessly into the fabric of the building. Every intervention required study and masterful execution to ensure that the Nave's historic integrity was preserved while breathing new life into this iconic Yale University building.
